Turn Your Radio On
As a teenager in the early 80s, I attended the Tulsa Soul-Winning Workshop. Members of the Exchange Street Church of Christ in Union City, TN, would load up in cars and vans and make the trek to Tulsa, OK. I always enjoyed that trip. I heard some great speakers.
One thing I enjoyed was the singing groups. One year, I purchased an album by a group called The Proclaimers. (At least I think that is right. If I remember correctly, the album sleeve was red.) It had an a cappella version of "Turn Your Radio On" that I loved. I can still hear their harmony in my head.
Turn your radio on and listen to the music in the air. Turn your radio on and glory share. Turn the lights down low and listen to the Master’s radio. Get in touch with God. Get in touch with God. Turn your radio on. Turn your radio on.
A radio station broadcasts on a steady frequency. If we tune into that frequency, we can hear it. If not, we either hear another station or static.
Jesus once spoke about this kind of hearing. He who has ears, let him hear (Matthew 11:15). The Spirit’s voice is not silent. His guidance is not distant. His presence is not rare. The Father has never stopped speaking through His Word and through His Spirit. The frequency is steady. The signal is strong. The invitation is clear.
The challenge comes when the noise of life grows louder than the voice that brings life.
There are days when our minds carry more static than clarity. There are moments when the volume of our own desires drowns out the whisper of God’s wisdom. There are seasons when pain, fear, pride, or distraction create spiritual interference. The Spirit continues to speak, yet our hearts drift away from the frequency that reveals His direction.
We know these distractions well.
The hurry that pushes us through a day without prayer.
The worry that fills our thoughts with imagined outcomes.
The entertainment that numbs our desires for deeper things.
The sin we refuse to release, which slowly dulls our spiritual senses.
The voice of self that insists on its own way.
None of these silences God. They silence us.
When we tune into the frequency, something begins to happen. The Spirit’s presence becomes clearer. The Scriptures feel alive again. Worship lifts our gaze. Gratitude softens our hearts. Conviction steadies our steps. God’s guidance rises with calm authority. The signal grows sharp. The static fades.
The Spirit is always broadcasting wisdom, comfort, conviction, and direction. He speaks through the Word He inspired. He whispers through a conscience shaped by grace. He stirs through the worship of God’s people. He moves through the counsel of the Spirit-filled. He nudges us toward obedience in small, quiet ways.
Take a moment today to turn your radio on.
Sit still long enough to hear the music in the air.
Open the Scriptures and let the Spirit speak.
Set aside the noise that competes for your attention.
Quell the inner storm that keeps you from peace.
Ask God to heighten your awareness of His presence.
You were made to live on this frequency.
You were made to hear the Shepherd’s voice.
You were made to walk in the Spirit’s leading.
Turn your radio on and listen to the music in the air. Turn your radio on and glory share. Turn the lights down low and listen to the Master’s radio. Get in touch with God. Get in touch with God. Turn your radio on. Turn your radio on.
